Sixteen of them are replicas of real American lighthouses. Three are general designs for people who want the look without a particular coastline attached.

The sixteen replicas

West Quoddy · Split Rock · Cape Hatteras · Cape Lookout · Cape Henry · Cape May · Cape Cod · Cape Canaveral · Montauk · Marblehead · Fire Island · Barnegat · Assateague · Oak Island · St Augustine · Tybee Island

Plus three general models: the Backyard Lighthouse, the Outdoor Lighthouse Decor, and the Lighthouse Garden Statue. If you honeymooned at Cape May, grew up near Split Rock, or drive past Barnegat every summer, that is usually how this decision gets made.

Choosing a size

Every model is offered across a size range, and the price follows the height.

HeightPriceFootprintWeight
3 foot$295.0016 × 16 × 29 in25 lb
4 foot$459.0021 × 21 × 41 in33 lb
5 foot$495.0022 × 22 × 41 in40 lb
6 foot$807.0025 × 25 × 49 in50 lb

Three feet reads as a garden accent — it works in a flower bed, beside a walkway, on a deck corner. Five and six feet read as a landmark: visible from the road, visible from the neighbour’s kitchen window, and heavy enough that you will want to think about where it goes before you put it there.

Lighting

Three lighting options are sold separately:

  • Solar powered lighting with a dusk-to-dawn sensor — $99.00. Comes on by itself at dusk, no wiring.
  • Lighthouse Rotating Light — $76.25. The beacon that turns.
  • Rotating Lighthouse Light — $295.00. The larger rotating unit.

Lights ship separately from the lighthouses. The listing states a 15-day ship window on lights.

What people actually use these for

A lighthouse in a flower bed is the obvious use. The less obvious ones are often the reason people buy.

Marking a driveway or a corner. With the solar dusk-to-dawn light in it, a lighthouse becomes a low-effort driveway marker that turns itself on.

Covering something ugly. Wellheads, septic cleanouts, pump housings and utility stubs. A lighthouse with a hollow base is a far better answer than the fake plastic boulder. Plowcraft also sells a purpose-built Outhouse Well Cover at $159.75, made to the size of your wellhead — one buyer had theirs custom-built to an oversized head.

“My wellhead was somewhat bigger than usual, so this had to be custom made. It fits perfectly and I think it’s so much more clever than the typical plastic boulder.”

Lake houses and nautical gardens, where a replica of a lighthouse you can name does more work than a generic one.

What they are made of

The lighthouse line is built from poly and MDO plywood rather than reclaimed barn wood — twenty-seven listings across the catalog use poly or maintenance-free poly material, and 45 use MDO or plywood.

That is a deliberate material choice for a piece that stands outdoors year-round without being brought in. Structural recycled plastic lumber was developed at Rutgers by materials-science professor Thomas Nosker, from HDPE blended with polystyrene. It has since gone into roughly 1.5 million U.S. railway ties — diverting about 300 million pounds of plastic from landfill — and into bridges rated to carry a 73-ton M1 Abrams tank. Unlike treated wood, it needs no preservatives that can leach into soil and groundwater.

In practice that means no rot, no annual repainting, and no decision to make about whether to bring it in for the winter.

Who builds them

All nineteen models come from Beaver Dam Woodworks, which accounts for 51 of the 146 pieces in Plowcraft’s catalog — more than any other shop. Plowcraft does not manufacture anything; it is a storefront for independently owned family shops, and each piece ships from the shop that built it. If you want to know how a specific model is fastened, finished or anchored, ask — construction and material questions get answered directly by the builder.

Ordering

Flat-rate shipping. Each listing shows Quick Ship (2–3 business days) or Ships in 15 (within 15 business days, generally built to order). Lights are quoted at 15 days. Tracking follows as soon as one exists. Some buyers have reported orders running past the stated window — these are large, heavy pieces built to order, so if you need one by a date, call first.

A six-foot lighthouse weighs 50 pounds and arrives in a large carton. Inspect it on arrival; if it is visibly damaged, refuse the delivery, have the carrier return it to sender, and get in touch. Returns: within 14 days of receipt for any reason, free return label, purchase price refunded; 10% restocking fee on most returns, waived for a defective item or a Plowcraft error in size or colour. Worth noting on a piece this size and weight.

Questions

Three feet for a flower bed or deck, five to six feet if you want it read from the road. Sizes and prices are in the table above.

No. Lights are sold separately: solar dusk-to-dawn $99.00, rotating light $76.25, larger rotating unit $295.00.

The line is built from poly and MDO rather than reclaimed wood, specifically so it can stay outside without seasonal maintenance.

That is one of the common uses. Plowcraft also sells a dedicated Outhouse Well Cover at $159.75, made to the size of your wellhead.
