The centrepieces

Wishing Well — $549.00. The one that turns a lawn into a designed landscape. It is also, practically, one of the better answers to a wellhead or a pump housing you would rather not look at.

Poly Dutch Windmill — $498.00 to $595.00. Blades that turn in the breeze. Built from poly rather than wood, which is the point — see materials below.

Rowboat Flower Planter — $271.00. A planter with a shape. Fills with annuals and sits on a lawn as a set piece.

Outhouse Well Cover — $159.75, made to the size of your wellhead. Purpose-built for the job. Made to order, and buyers have had them built to non-standard heads.

“My wellhead was somewhat bigger than usual, so this had to be custom made. It fits perfectly and I think it’s so much more clever than the typical plastic boulder.”

PiecePrice
Pier Post with Fisher Girl$112.75
Pier Post with Fisher Boy$112.75
Pier Post with Solar Light$89.75

The solar-lit pier post at $89.75 is the cheapest way in this catalog to get a light that turns itself on at the end of a path.

Planters, stands and crates

PiecePrice
Tin Succulent Planter$29.75
Succulent Planter$29.75
Farm Crate$39.75
Tin Planter$39.75 – $69.75
Plant Stand$75.99

These are the pieces that end up as gifts more often than as purchases for the buyer’s own yard — one buyer bought a Farm Crate as a bridal shower gift and reported it arrived quickly and securely packaged.

Also in the collection: the Round Folding Table at $148.75 (22 × 22 × 18 inches) and three trash cabinets, $275.00 to $295.00 — which, despite the unglamorous name, draw a disproportionate share of the shop’s reviews. The 26 whirligigs at $58.50 are also counted in this category.

Wood or poly — which to buy

Two material families run through this collection, and they answer different questions.

Reclaimed wood and rustic tin. Sixty-four of Plowcraft’s 146 listings describe reclaimed wood and 59 mention tin. This is salvaged material — barn siding, fence boards, decking, old roofing, dropped off at Summitville Woodworking by the fence and decking companies pulling it out. There is a lot of it to work from: the EPA estimated 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris generated in the United States in 2018, more than twice the amount of municipal solid waste, with about 144 million tons of it landfilled.

Because the material is salvaged, no two pieces are the same. Plowcraft states this outright: “Since these items are made with reclaimed materials, each piece is unique. Expect slight variations!”

Poly. Twenty-seven listings use poly or maintenance-free poly material — the windmill, and the same material family behind the lighthouses. Structural recycled plastic lumber was developed at Rutgers by professor Thomas Nosker from HDPE blended with polystyrene; it has since gone into roughly 1.5 million U.S. railway ties and into bridges rated for a 73-ton tank. Unlike treated wood, it requires no preservatives that can leach into soil and groundwater.

The short version

Reclaimed wood if you want character and are willing to maintain it. Poly if you want to install it and stop thinking about it.

Wood durability varies more than people expect. The USDA Forest Service’s Wood Handbook classifies cedar heartwood as resistant or very resistant to decay, but the Forest Products Laboratory notes that resistance varies by species and by position within the tree, and that resistance to one organism does not predict resistance to another. Ask the shop about the specific piece.

Placement

The centrepieces are heavy and permanent-feeling. Decide where before it arrives.

  • Wishing wells and well covers go over the thing you are hiding, or at the focal point of a front lawn where the sightline from the road lands. The Outhouse Well Cover is made to your wellhead’s size, so measure before you order.
  • Windmills need an open line to the wind or the blades will not turn.
  • Pier posts mark an entrance, a path end, or a corner. The solar version marks it after dark.
  • Planters and crates are the fill-in layer — porch steps, a bench end, a table centre.

Custom work

This category takes more custom requests than any other, because the pieces are large and the situations are specific. Three separate buyers describe getting a piece built to size or modified on request, including a well cover made to an oversized head and a mailbox altered for a small extra charge.

If your wellhead is an odd size or you need a windmill at a particular height, ask before you order. Construction and material questions go directly to the shop that builds the piece.

Ordering

Flat-rate shipping. Listings show Quick Ship (2–3 business days) or Ships in 15 (within 15 business days — most of the large pieces in this category are built to order). Tracking follows when it exists. Some buyers have reported orders running past the stated window; on a $549 wishing well built to order, call before you order if a date matters.

These are large cartons. Inspect on arrival, and if a package is visibly damaged, refuse it, have the carrier return it to sender, and get in touch. One buyer received a trash cabinet whose finish had been damaged in transit and had to work through a partial refund — Plowcraft did make it right, but the packaging matters on pieces like these.

Returns: within 14 days of receipt for any reason, free return label, purchase price refunded; 10% restocking fee on most returns, waived for a defective item or a Plowcraft error in size or colour.
